About the wargames, these are the wargames and boardgames I have regularly practiced over the last years though I have played and tested other ones (SPI's Battle for Germany is a simple and wonderful wargame). Tank Leader is a great game with innovative features although the die are sometimes too important, the german units and cards are also oftenly greatly overestimated (a common trait of many american games).
Yes, there is a serious misconceptions about Germans in the Consim world, especially the SS.

About World in Flames : we are playing with the latest deluxe edition with the latest rules available on ADG's site.

    We don't use :
    Carriers in Flames
Ships in Flames (adds too many counters for the same result)
Planes in Flames (managing pilots in a grand strategy game is like bothering about movement in ennemy territory in a grand strategical computer game... )
I never bother with all those expansions, they just add way too many "ants" to the game (all those little supporting units that just clog up the map). I won't play with territorial either, as I find the notion of the Brits building a corps sized unit of Ugandan pygmies to be pretty ridiculous.

You're fairly right about the territorials (I'am currently playing England in a game and I don't build any territorials, I have no Build Points to waste with second rate units at this moment of the game) but I think the use of divisions (Africa Aflame) is rather necessary as it softens the impact of the dice on combat rolls as the divisions can take the first casualties. But we don't use the special abilities some divisions (like the engineers) can have as they add rules and thus complexity.

Aren't we drifting out of topic ?

The problem I have with the proliferation of "ants" is that the CRT and production model of the game was originally designed for corps losses, and so that a '/2' result would clear the hex.

Divisions were originally intended to be used in peripheral theatres like say Norway.

Those divisions both reduce casualties, and increase the odds of holding a hex, so the game becomes very WWI like.

The way I like to play is that the strongest units must be eliminated first when taking losses, and that divisions count as one unit for stacking (no more "free" division stacking).

Aren't we drifting out of topic ?
Well, its better than listening to Coracle whine about culture flips for the one billionth time.

          • Totally O-T but,

--> Tamerlin: If you want the exact Winston Churchill quote, it is:-
"Democracy is the worst form of government there is, except for all the others that have been tried".

I also quite like "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter"

Pillager : thank you for W. Churchill quote. Actually, I've never heard the correct quote before. I correct my profile as soon as possible.

Austin : your assessment of the "division" effect is correct, but in my opinion it reduces the randomness of a throw ranging from 1 to 10. Perhaps should we limit the number of divisions that can be taken as losses to only one.

And no, in my own opinion, Civ3 is not so a great leap forward.

By the way, I didn't knew the second quote, it's also a very good one.

Perhaps will I add it after "my" Apolyton quote.

                    • If you automate a settler with "Shift A' instead of 'A', it won't build over existing improvements, and does a fairly good job
